Yes, you are guessing right - I am going to speak about what happens monthly to most women: periods! Something so natural and so normal yet so little spoken about. During this 'plastic challenge June' I would like to particularly put periods within the plastic issue. It's pretty easy to see from the above pictures that the most commonly used sanitary products come with a lot of plastic - apart from the plastic in the products themselves, there is plenty of plastic in the wrappers, not to talk about the new applicators (what happened to the old cardboard ones? why do we need new fancy plastic ones?). Even if you are someone who doesn't have these products around the house, I am sure you have encountered these on the strandline on the beach! Yes, on the beach.. The ocean conservancy's cleanup project in 2009 (click for the very informative full-report here) collected >20000 tampons applicators (out of 10,000,000 plastic items) - seems like a lot to me!
