Sustainability. Seems to be so hip to be ‘sustainable’ and ‘zero waste’ nowadays. When I say ‘no thanks’ to some single use item , I get some praises in response such as ‘well done , we should all do that’ . I may say thanks, or act polite but all I am saying in my head is ‘then why the heck are you still giving those out !? Rant over But will sustainability be the next trend destined for failure or will it be really something ? I mean , what’s been happening in recent years and what’s been happening in this crazy 2020 should have woken us up. Has it ? I may be wrong but I want to be hopeful that no, it’s not gonna fade , and yes , it will catch up more and more people. Whether this will be fast or slow , I don’t know , whether it may be too late to do something , I don’t know either ..
But something good is happening. And that is : communities are forming . From extinction rebellion , to the Fridays for future .. and even big online communities , from connecting influencers to connecting people that want to make a difference. I believe that sustainability is a matter of cooperation . Individual actions work, but collective measures, whether they are protests or everyday life actions work even better . We must be sending a signal. It was great to see the community at the Venice climate camp , and it would be even better to see how the community grew and what more ideas can we have at the next, if there will be one. In the meantime : we must rely on the online communities . And there are some great ones one there ! Aside from the various Facebook ‘zero waste’ groups - there is a particularly interesting community called ‘WONDR’ . They just launched a new ‘future of sustainability challenge’ - with community engagement at the heart of it. Various overarching topics, where conversations are led by some ‘challenge leaders’ through projects . I happen to be one of the ‘challenge leaders’ - in the ‘home & lifestyle’ overarching umbrella. This is because I believe ultimately we don’t have to look that far for changes. I think we should feel empowered to drive the change but to do so we must get the right information and the right tools to do so. So, why not check out my project and while you are there answer my question on where you believe sustainability should go ?
