This week saw another ‘Earth day’ coming and going . My social medias were full of great words and pledges and I myself have taken part in some ‘on the day’ activism (aka plogging and collecting quite a lot of trash in just two hours by the beach , mainly cigarette butts , cigarette boxes and sweets wrappers ...) . But I am definitely worried about the ‘carefreeness’ coming packed together with having a lot of influencers showing some positive messages of hope for the planet. This worry came after I realised that 4 years ago (yes FOUR!) I also was quite a naive thinker. This is when I decided to put my idea of making a blog a reality (I was dwindling with the idea since 2014, when I stained the bathroom yellow trying to dye my hair ‘blonder’ with turmeric - or maybe curry powder) and I also wrote a post dedicated to Earth day.
Now, a few years wiser and with some years as a researcher under my belt (and a few grey hairs as a result, time to get the spices out again) - I am really not that positive . Yes , some things are ‘better’ now : sustainability went from being a small niche to a big community of ‘sustainable minded blogger’ , that I am thankfully able to interact with . And 'in theory', my blog has always wanted to be positive and focus on the triade of ‘holistic sustainability’: planet , community and personal wellbeing . At the same time I can’t help to be less optimistic: atmospheric CO2 is rising (yes, despite the pandemic and all) , and I am incredibly terrified of greenwashing, given by the arm race between consumers wanting sustainable and industry catching up with sustainability labels , which ends in mislabelling and label fraud . I am also worried about echo chambers, fake news... and all the rest that's plaguing us these days (it's too much to worry about and one must be careful not to fall into eco anxiety..) But we cannot just be worried. We have to see these things for what they are and try our best to be alert . Keep smart. Keep reading, keep engaged, keep listening , keep cultivating your own mental well-being and your individuality. Make sure Earth day is everyday but also you day is everyday and your neighbour day is everyday. Make holistic sustainability the centre of your life. And maybe , just maybe , we will survive extinction without causing even more damage ...
