Social media, eh!? That endless scrolling we all seem so addicted to That targeting of advertising The 'bubble' of interests we seem to get caught in and can spiral to create social divides (I mentioned before how if i look at my social accounts it seems like everyone wants to save the planet, whereas in reality climate change deniers and people that prefer profits over ethic still exist in abundance). That is what social media seem to have become, despite (maybe) some good intentions to begin with So, what if it in some sense it is being used wisely? I remember 9 years ago when i was told that i should join 'twitter',
" that's the space where scientists go", jobs and opportunities get advertised you can be active, share your work, be noticed At that point, as an intern looking for a PhD those seemed like very good points, but.. twitter, really? That space where you can only write very short "tweets" ? That place that seems to be used by politicians to rant and to comment on stupid tv series ? Yes That very same place is heavily used by scientists To share research, to advertise jobs, to share achievements (or failures), to rant about academia, to post fieldwork pictures, even to discuss topics (with tweeting series). And the best part. To ask for help, with ID of some animals, with some experimental issues, with bibliographic research and even with code. I am ever so grateful to often have been on the receiving end, especially since i ask twitter as my last resort after i try and try and try (like that person passing me an entire piece of phyton code allowing me to use some bathymetric data, which may seem trivial to some but allowed me to then go on with finally the real work!). It's also a place for help with the more mental side of academia, and realise we are all on the same boat. Maybe it would be a great place to start some science revolution, against whatever it is that academia is transforming into... (hence the many #leavingacademia posts....). Anyway, it is my place of inspiration, and I wanted to have a positive post to say that some means can be used wisely, if you know how to use it a bit (no, they don't come with instructions, but we can write our own ;) ) and just as a little reminder, go follow me @Holistic_fish (or @CamiBe90 for the more scientific things; sorry-not-sorry for the benthos and bivalves obsession)
