Flags.
Identifying them used to be one my favourite past-times. Especially on boats. I loved seeing new ones and trying to guess where they came from.I remember making the connection that big super yachts often flied Panama or Malta flags. I just assumed they were super rich there, until one day the concept of tax evasion was explained to me. I had also often seen people on boats where the language they spoke didn’t match up the flag . I remember finding it so weird to wanting to fly a flag ( have your boat registered ) in a country different than your own.. and that many of those were Belgian or Dutch flags. I soon learnt that it is much easier, that there are less rules to obey and less bureaucracy. They are call convenience flags and the name just says it all..

Did I already say how much I like Tina Muir?
Firstly she is an awesome and inspiring runner who does amazing things Secondly her ‘together runs’ are keeping me sane in insanity and I love falling in her footsteps and just listening to a conversation imagining what would I say if she was running next to me (though next ones are going to be ‘together workouts’ so let’s see if the love will persist) Thirdly she is a great podcaster - and one that is not scared about ‘evolution’ as she took on the running realised venture touching on some very deep topic affecting running community worldwide (from race to genders, religion, the environment..) And lastly (or should I have put this first) she is one or the most honest ‘influencers’ (in inverted comma because I hate that word) that I have seen - you can just tell she is just saying what she is thinking and is totally unfiltered (especially when she talks on a run or just after , I have totally enjoyed her live posts on Instagram with ‘hair just taken out of a ponytail’) . I recognise myself in that free flowing way of thinking and sometimes forgetting where it is going (think you’ve noticed the tendency to go on a tangent) and that’s okay And it is about honesty that I want to talk about today Evenings on board a boat with limited internet call for a lot of reading . Which feels very refreshing and a nice break from being over connected . I recently finished ‘la dama del mare’/La dame de la mer by Anita Conti- a very adventurous researcher.
The book is a true story from when, back in the early 1950s, she was aboard a french fishing vessel going to Alaska to fish cod . The book is a collection of her diaries over there , and has the capacity to transport you right on-board and gripping you: reading about her difficulties keeping the camera equipment clean and the way in which they ‘sent letter’ at home is the cherry on top of the cake making the book also highly entertaining. I am very thankful for my local librarian (Libreria Mare di Carta) who suggested it to me, don’t think I would have come across it online…. Another Saturday is here , and as some of you who follow my media know already , I have been on far away island (far in terms of distance but also far from reality and ‘normal society’) for the past week....
The other day I had a lapsus.
I was talking to a friend and said ‘the new ministry for economic transition’ while I meant to say ‘ecological transition’. Yes, in Italy we now have this new ministry (also France and Spain have one) - charged with the big task of spending recovery fund money destined toward the green policies (which happen to be quite a lot).. so you may forgive my lapsus, but it is evident that this is as much ecological as it is economical. To achieve ecological transition it is necessary to do some tactical economical moves. No doubt about it.. |
