Did I already say how much I like Tina Muir? Firstly she is an awesome and inspiring runner who does amazing things Secondly her ‘together runs’ are keeping me sane in insanity and I love falling in her footsteps and just listening to a conversation imagining what would I say if she was running next to me (though next ones are going to be ‘together workouts’ so let’s see if the love will persist) Thirdly she is a great podcaster - and one that is not scared about ‘evolution’ as she took on the running realised venture touching on some very deep topic affecting running community worldwide (from race to genders, religion, the environment..) And lastly (or should I have put this first) she is one or the most honest ‘influencers’ (in inverted comma because I hate that word) that I have seen - you can just tell she is just saying what she is thinking and is totally unfiltered (especially when she talks on a run or just after , I have totally enjoyed her live posts on Instagram with ‘hair just taken out of a ponytail’) . I recognise myself in that free flowing way of thinking and sometimes forgetting where it is going (think you’ve noticed the tendency to go on a tangent) and that’s okay And it is about honesty that I want to talk about today I think the only way to move forward in this world is to be transparent . Much more transparent. Let’s take some examples, I will start with science, since it’s close to home and since it has been in the news quite a lot recently. I already spoke about the scientific method and why controversial results are okay but the whole process should be much more transparent. I say transparent and not just ‘open access’ (yes , because I have huge issues with the way open access science is managed which I will touch upon another time so if you know nothing about this don’t worry and stay tuned). Transparent because it’s about ‘saying it all’ and while in theory methods should be written clearly in order to be repeatable, the truth is that often they are not (yes I get it is super hard to write clear methods, but often reading and reviewing I can tell something was missed out on purpose). Many other things could definitely do with more transparency and honesty Politics. don’t even get me started. Is just a big black box that leaves you to wonder just why one decision was taken rather than another Labels should definitely be made more transparent . I already discussed some of the greenwashing issues related to fai trade and eco labelling , and here the transparency aspect should be mostly on the criteria used to award these (and make the scores for each product available ) but also generally labelling of items like food (but also clothes) with much more details than ‘ from the EU’ . What does that even mean? And while, yes, there are some ‘EU’ rules for food , there are also plenty of rules within each country which are much more specific. And yes, I also want to know who is being underpaid in order to make that tin of tomatoes or that litre of milk so cheap Bill companies (water, energy, gas..) are another thing that could really do with being more transparent . I really want to see what the company does with the money paid in ‘fees’ and who they are paying (and how much) with those . Especially when you find yourself paying more in fees than consumption ... And so it goes...I’d like to see the accounting from the big brands: who are they paying and how much. Imagine a world where everything you do could be put up to scrutiny . It may go against ‘privacy’ but surely you wouldn’t get up to so many mishaps . So I believe we would need some of that . Imagine how much less greenwashing there would be if forced ‘honesty’ (or transparency) came to exist . I am not saying it should be applied to every part of life , though one would be strongly encouraged to be honest - for the sake of happy living together and caring about one another . And yes honesty is hard but also incredibly liberating to be free of constraints . Thank you Tina for being so real
