Salagadoola mechicka boola Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo Put them together and what have you got Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo… You recognise this right ? Yes That’s the magic song that got Cinderella ready for her big night with the prince… What’s that got to do with anything ? Well..... What is the difference between bidibibodibibu and ‘restoration habitats protected species biodiversity bring back return previous state upscale targets’ ? Maybe that the first one got Cinderella in a beautiful dress, transformed a pumpkin into an elegant carriage.. albeit just until midnight when everything returned back to the status quo (well, she even lost a shoe so there was even a loss…).
I guess that what I am saying may not make perfect sense , but maybe you are starting to get the point of this little rant . Let me give you some context There is a new nature restoration law being presented by the EU Do you see anything familiar ? I see a lot of the same words that have been used for years Words on the benefits of restoration such as ‘increase biodiversity’ , with objectives of the law to ‘enable recovery’ and ‘contribute to the EU climate mitigation and adaptation policies’ , and targets such as ‘improving and re-establishing biodiverse habitats’ or ‘no net loss of green space’. The marine target was a particularly striking one - ‘restoring marine habitats such as seagrass beds or sediment bottoms that deliver significant benefits, including for climate change mitigation, and restoring the habitats of iconic marine species such as dolphins and porpoises, sharks and seabirds’ - on one hand wanting to restore ‘sediment bottoms’ (like, what does that even mean) and on the other of course thinking only of the iconic species? Dear EU: I think we moved past the ‘charismatic fauna’ a while ago…) The implementation part leaves me even more perplexed, ‘EU countries are expected to submit National Restoration Plans to the Commission right. I can totally see this working. I totally see Italy drawing a great national restoration plan (hear the sarcasm in my voice?) within two years of the Regulation coming into force, so, by 2024… tand that’s a plan, that will take a while (years?) to be implemento achieve targets by 2030… (we are totally on track…) showing how they will deliver on the targets. They will also be required to monitor and report on their progress. The European Environment Agency will draw up regular technical reports on progress towards the targets. Well, at least some jobs will be created, I guess The Commission, in turn, will report to the European Parliament and to the Council on the implementation of the Nature Restoration Law. And hopefully all of this before we are extinct… I think this time bidibibodibibu is not even going to last until midnight…
