We all heard the news. The IPCC was clear about it. All of the scientific evidence pieced together : we are doomed Fires ? Wind? Storms ? Floods? Seems something out of a ‘game of thrones’ title? Well fear not: winter is coming. And so wild hot and arid summers. And yes, it is likely our faults, and that of generations before us. Us as societies.
Not all of course, as some smaller tribes still seem to live in harmony with nature, but still, they will see the world turning for the worst. And it is not going to be much in the future, we are living it already. So, really, it’s not just our children and grandchildren we should be worrying about: our own lives will be affected if they aren't already.. We should definitely do something to at least slow it down as much as possible, as prognostics would be even worse if we kept going at the rate we are. And yes, responsibility it’s not just on the individual but we should also press on for the big changes while doing what we can . But it’s not enough. Not anymore. Don’t know if you have been a scout, but the motto ‘Estote parati’, definitely applies here. Yes. Be prepared. We must draw not only a climate mitigation plan but also a climate adaptation plan . We must learn to live with this situation and adapt our lives. We should design cities and societies able to cope with extreme events. If we want to look at the positives : this will create plenty of jobs, interesting jobs, sustainable jobs.. we can create a new economy, and we could try to create a new relationship with nature, one that respects it and restore it, for its value as nature but also as the buffer that can help us thrive, by absorbing some of the 'shock', and for contributing to the carbon cycle acting in many cases as a natural carbon capture and storage... If you want to know more, outrage and optimism have released a bonus episode taking a look this new IPCC report! More on the topic, and a breakdown of the report coming soon!
