I recently listened to a great podcast episode on creativity (thank you Tina Muir!) . The podcast guest was Chase Jarvis , and a point that he made found me in total agreement . How often did you say ‘I wish I could do xyZ but I don’t have time’ ? What if you say instead ‘I am not putting xyZ as my priority right now’? I have always been an advocate of the ‘everything is possible if you want to do it’. Not saying it will be easy, but possible! Yes , because if you really want something you will put all of your energy and effort into it, you will not mind about having sleepless night , about being physically tired - you are working towards your dreams. And so you prioritise that specific tasks that will get you there.
And this does not mean you have to choose only one thing: you can choose to do a lot of things (but probably none of them at a professional level..) , but that would be your call because you are in the driving seat.. you could say your priority is not to prioritise just yet.. This idea of priority made me think about one of my common responses when asked ‘what do you think is the most important action to safeguard Venice’? In a week I have been asked 3 times in 3 different occasions , and, without being prepared at all , I found myself saying ‘putting the lagoon first’ . Thinking about it: there would be no doubt about the cruise ships going OUT of the lagoon (and not even in Marghera) , there would be investments made into greener water transport, there will be a better sewage management , there will be some more effort into ‘nature based’ solutions (instead of giving up and say it is all destined to become a lake ) and restoration of lost habitats... . All these things may also benefit human, because there will be investments into greener infrastructure which will move the economy and bring jobs, there will be a return of fisheries , both things that may attract more residents which will reduce overtourism without killing businesses. Do you see? All of these benefits are additional benefits all spanning from the single decision of prioritising the environment . If you are interested, go an see how we are trying to do just that and putting the idea forward with the project VITAL (VenIce naTural capitAL) - and please bear in mind we are using a low impact website. Now . I am giving you the Venice example because many of you may be familiar with the issues (we were again in the news as UNESCO warned we risk the ‘endangered’ status . As if we were a rare species at risk of extinction...) , but this I am sure can be applied in many other places ! Just think : what could be prioritised beyond finance??
