Today I’d like to revisit a post written last year after the first edition of the Ona short film festival. A year has passed and the second edition of the festival arrived , bigger , renewed and full of engaging activities! Again , within a few minutes of starting the festival introduction, Joaquin Gomez (the festival director) mentioned this idea that being an outdoor adventurer can really put you in a deeper place of appreciation and respect for the environment.
And one year on I still believe exactly that . Especially after a year where the outdoors , the mountains , could not be explored any longer in such easy ways (in Italy skiing resorts were closed for the pandemic, for example) and to ski downhill one had to trek all the way up first. Like back in the days. Appreciating time, appreciating each step.. Before following this idea further, I should make a distinguish between ‘outdoor adventurer’ and ‘adrenaline junkie’, and while the former will also most likely experience some adrenaline , the latter is by no mean deserving of the adventurer title (at least, IMO). When you are an adventurer, in fact, you must have respect for the place you find yourself in , paying attention let’s say to the changes in vegetation which may indicate changes in environmental conditions (higher up/ wetter area..), changes to the clouds which may be an early warning for a storm you don’t want to get caught in , changes to the colour of the sea which may give you an idea of changes in wind direction or intensity. You are truly one with nature . And so you observe the way in which those magnificent birds fly, you spot a big turtle or are curious how that small insect has made it all the way out to the middle of the sea. You appreciate where you are. Yes. I still believe that ‘people belong to places , places don’t belong to people’ - and I wish for more people to find the place they belong to. Whether it is the top of a mountain, the middle of the forest, floating above or below water. There is a place for everyone. If we care for it Check out the film program here Read the original post here
