The rainbow warrior, mythical ship of Greenpeace is sailing in the northern Adriatic these days, it will sail for scientific research , first on cetaceans and then to install temperature sensors in an effort to understand just by how much the Adriatic is warming (yeap it is..). But it also came for a stopover in Venice launching their latest report ‘Venezia non affonda per caso’ . Those who read me regularly know that I am often skeptic of associations , but I like what Greenpeace has been up to lately. The report starts highlighting four of the 50 recommendations for Venice and its lagoon (originally set out by Unesco) : those linked to climate , and adding particular focus on the #50 which is all about the MOSE system and how it should be operated in such a way that it is monitored (the S stands for ‘sperimentale’ - experimental - after all…) and anyway highlights how ‘maybe’ it won’t really be enough , and how only relying on ‘technology’ may be a bit limiting . Finally , an honest assessment of the situation without big claims in either directions. Just some frank , plain , facts . Important facts.
It then goes on talking about sea level rise, and again does this in a very objective, concise yet scientifically sound way. No catastrophic claims , nor useless optimism. Just science and linked up studies . It looks at the ecosystem services and the carbon sequestration potential of a healthy lagoon , and then it goes deeper into ‘greenwashing’ actions (like offsetting emissions in dubious ways) , the tendency (to put it softly) to put fossil fuels developments at the forefront (including drilling for oil in the Adriatic), with fake actions to achieve ‘climate neutrality’ and advertisement aiming to delegate the responsibility to the consumers. And last , but not least , how this lack of responsibility is also a problem affecting institutions , with initiatives of adaptation and mitigation largely missing … All of this in only 11 pages. Have to say that this is really a nice example, showing that good communication can be done. And of course , even for those who don’t have time to read through it all (if you understand Italian you really should though) there are 6 shorts conclusions point. The last is that Venice is not sinking by accident, and we are all going to sink with it..
