One more conference is over. This time - all about aquaculture Of course, working primarily with shellfish, even if I consider myself an ecologist, I end up touching some topics that can be interesting for aquaculture.. one of those is carbon sink potential of shellfish farms A hot topic it turns out, as at least 4 presentations were concerned with the matter..
Interesting, all taking different approaches.. and all with similar conclusions, despite the different data.. We still need to figure a lot of aspects out. And as scientists, this is what we should do. Not come out with a precise number and say exactly how much co2 is stored, if we don't know that number yet. Similarly we shouldn't give some processes for granted if we don't know they are the case. I know on my side I am always the boring cautious scientist answering things like 'it's context dependent', then trying to add a piece of the puzzle. Just that puzzle is never ending and certainty is not in my vocabulary. I guess, it'll never be. Not just about carbon numbers, but also about all other things. I can come close to probability of something happening, with more or less confidence, but then I will likely challenge that, question that, or someone else might. That's why there are practioners (farmers, restoration) and policy makers, that take some of that science and with their responsibilty decide to take a route or another depending on the outcomes. So, while it is the responsibility of the scientist to make sure the science is clear and understandable with a clearer/easier/ simpler language (and open access), it is also the scientist responsibility not to make statements, or omit processes based on 'intuitions', Going back on the co2 sequestration potential, it is important to quantify fluxes of all of the processes associated with the growth of an individual, based upon the environmental conditions where is growing. And yes, eventually, it would be even better to take the whole system in a much more holistic way, and we are far from that yet. So for now, providing the most comprehensive sets of data possible, and integrating when necessary. On that note, if you hear that 'shellfish are a net sink of carbon because they make a shell' and don't hear any ifs or buts or any other consideration, then let alarm bells sound, or, at least, ask them to explain more... read more considerations on carbon sequestration here ...
