As I am writing this I am on the flight back home (yes yes I know , flying is not eco friendly, but taking a couple of days to get somewhere is not sustainable either ..). I just spent three days at my first in person meeting (after two years of zoom) and I must say it was great to interact and meet face to face the people I will spend the next five years working with, and getting creative together .. (and well, brainstorming on zoom kills said creativity) Yes, but.. working on what ? I figured this would be the right time to tell you all about a great project called WaterLANDS, one of horizon2020 green deal projects , one of the 4 funded for the cluster (with > 75 projects to choose from, the coordinator surely did a great job) . With 32 partners there is surely something great that can be achieved ..
Waterlands aims to restore wetland sites across Europe which have been decimated by human activity, and lays the foundations for scalable protection across much wider areas. The latter being very important , as the project is not a self standing , small scale, ‘restore x area and stop there, and when it finishes who knows’ but rather aims to, yes, actively restore some areas in 6 action sites in Europe (Ireland , England , Netherlands, Venice, Bulgaria and Estonia) , learning from knowledge sites , while setting up framework to upscale these activities in space and time. Framework which will include improving the governance but also proposing and setting in motion new financial mechanisms. It’s ambitious indeed , but the enthusiasm and energy could be definitely felt in the room containing the old Dublin wall as witness. And progress was already made in the six months of work, as You can read more and follow waterlands through these channels Website
