Last year, around this time, I spoke about the importance of wetlands for word wetlands day 2020 ( I recommend you go back to that post to catch up on what wetlands day stands for and the importance of wetlands and why should we do something about it). A lot has happened in one year, it has been a super eventful (or event-less) one, but somehow we are here again. And this is not just a normal ‘world wetlands day’ but is the first one falling in the UN decade of ecosystem restoration Time to collect our thoughts, and look at progresses in the 'science of wetlands'… Unfortunately, the summary work/review that I have been working on the past year is not published yet (but is getting there, just one more round of reviews: so stay tuned!) - I cannot share the full results until it is, but I can say that wetlands are definitely getting some attention in recent years. Their restoration is being more and more studied, especially in regards to carbon sequestration (yes, the thing I have spoken about before). There are some nice recent stories featured on the ramsar site: for example how nature based solution can power a green jobs recovery, and also offer the best investment for flood protection, or how wetlands can be considered a natural solution to climate change (provided that we reduce emissions as much as possible first) - and more news and examples of great big efforts can be found there, so i recommend to head to the site for a bit of great news. On top of that, a big proposal was just submitted to the EU as part of their green deal funding call, and while the likelihood of funding is very very low for these kind of projects, if that project gets funded it would have the potential to have some large scale positive impacts for restoration worldwide. So let’s collectively cross our fingers, shall we? And on a more local scale to Venice, aiming to be of example for other places.. let me finally present you this wonderful team of people led by We are Here Venice and LagunaB - we are also officially 1 year old now!
