Algorithm. Everytime I hear this word I can’t help but thinking about the Willie Peyote song - which, while actually being mostly about love, makes many parallels with modern day technology.. and it's quite funny and relatable this is one of my favourite parts of the song (English below) Io le mie emozioni le ho criptate Le ho nascoste tipo in codice, le hai decifrate La mia chiave era segreta ma tu sei un hacker […] Convinti che per essere sicuri serva costruire Muri e barricare le emozioni in una cassaforte E solo una combinazione coi tuoi numeri puoi andare oltre Hai il passepartout per queste porte […] Tu ti muovi così bene, dimmi come fai Ad entrare senza password e a sgamarmi i file L'algoritmo ha il tuo ritmo (I have encrypted my emotions, I have kind of hidden them in code, but you deciphered them my key was secret but you are an hacker […] Convinced that to be safe you need to build walls and barricate emotions in a safe And that only a combination with your numbers can get you further You have the master key for these doors […] You move so well, tell me how you do it To enter without password and to find my files The algorithm has you rhythm) An algorithm is defined as ‘a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer’. A machine learning algorithm is the method by which the ‘Artificial Intelligence’ system conducts its task, generally predicting output values from given input data, usually by identifying patterns in either ‘supervised’ or ‘unsupervised’ manners.
Machine learning algorithms can be very useful, for instance they can really help with some data analysis, going beyond what the human eyes can see and help to distinguish patterns, for example of climate or even animal behaviour (and some have been very useful for my work in the investigation of mussel gaping behaviour ) But also they can be quite scary - like those made to enhance consumerism (targeting personal preferences) that may even be based on your facial expression while shopping and looking at billboards And the list of algorithms usage goes on, for example some are even being used (or at least designed to) make important hospital decisions (such as the ‘triage’ process ) and even to give sustainability scores to industries or to decide on insurance prices. I don’t personally think it’s all bad, I mean, I have started to value more and more what they could do. But as a user of these methods, i really also appreciate how ‘black box’ they are, and unlike any other kind of statistics or model where you can somehow enter at any step, this ‘artificial intelligence’ is locked inside some unpeneatrable walls. And what’s inside is something we regard as much better than human brain, as it is ‘unbiased’. But actually, it inherited human biases and most of AI’s applications are filled with racism and gender bias. We are not on the right track to fight inequality this way, and since its a black box that does things on its own, and worse keeps on learning on its own (although usually to learn you need a teacher, but if you are taught something in the wrong way, chances are you will be carrying the errors with you for your whole life) i am doubtful that it will be the right tool to move on from this impasse we find ourselves in... I hope to be wrong And if you are interested : an interesting read to go further in the issue here
