Before talking about all of the possible ways we will go extinct (we will), i want to use this space to talk about something more ‘positive’ and think about how can we avoid it in the short term. Some of the major causes of - avoidable or at least delayable - probable extinction are related to imbalances that we have created. Leading to this feeling that the planet is revolting against us and throwing us wildfires, flash floods, drought, seasons shifts, and even pandemics and new illnesses that may be linked to the disruption of nature due to climate impacts.
Yes because as we should all be familiar with by now, we are experiencing climate change now. It’s not something far ahead in some distance future. It’s not something for our grandchildren, but for us and our parents and grandparents. Temperatures in some parts of the world are reaching close to humans critical temperature, from Pakistan and India to some parts of the US and even Europe, with another heatwave forecasted for the upcoming week(s). And we are having some bad droughts in Europe.. do I need to add more? We are a bit late to think that just mitigation will be the solution. Yes, we still should work towards our ‘net zero’ but we are far far off our targets and time passes fast.. So, in parallel to a mitigation plan we NEED to work on adaptation, with clear plans that will allow us to navigate the crisis that is ahead of us. The US environment protection agency has a list of potential strategies for adaptation ‘Intended to inform and assist communities in identifying potential alternative’ - and a lot of those interventions (on page 2) refer to ‘maintaining and restoring wetlands’ (check the WaterLands project on this note), and there are also some interesting case studies of states that implemented some of these action plans. It should be noted that the US has also a ‘climate resilience toolkit’ , and maybe less fancy but Europe also has a ‘Climate ADAPT’ site with an ‘adaptation tool’. We are moving in the right direction, maybe, but we need adaptation projects happening fast, without forgetting to also act for mitigation… To look into more details on adaptation and what is being done already in some parts of the world (so far netherlands and some italian regions are on the site) I recommend this ‘webdoc’ about Adaptation and a personal plug, for the Italian speakers who may want to hear about oysters and how they may help us in terms of adaptation, you can find out here...
