This week I was going to write about all of the routes to human extinction (don’t worry, this post will come and the list is getting longer and longer) but then, planning for a ‘scientific walk’ I was invited to host at Ocean Space, I started thinking about invasive species, and then decided it would make for a good topic to discuss here.

Again. Another ‘day’ .. And you know my take on this by now
Since there is ‘no planet B’, every day should be world environment day , so maybe we should pledge to really incorporate the environment into our every day decision making protocols… Money..
If we want to move away from capitalism and towards a more sustainable way of living, we need to start thinking about our relationship with them.. Tomorrow , Sunday 22/05/22 is world biodiversity day!
I still don’t get the point of having ‘days’ dedicated to something to which, really, everyday should be dedicated to, but.. anyway.. maybe one day we won’t need it, for now we should make peace with the idea that we do need the reminder that we need a highly bio diverse world to live well. Let's make a good use of this reminder then. The rainbow warrior, mythical ship of Greenpeace is sailing in the northern Adriatic these days, it will sail for scientific research , first on cetaceans and then to install temperature sensors in an effort to understand just by how much the Adriatic is warming (yeap it is..).
But it also came for a stopover in Venice launching their latest report ‘Venezia non affonda per caso’ . Those who read me regularly know that I am often skeptic of associations , but I like what Greenpeace has been up to lately. As I am writing this I am on the flight back home (yes yes I know , flying is not eco friendly, but taking a couple of days to get somewhere is not sustainable either ..).
I just spent three days at my first in person meeting (after two years of zoom) and I must say it was great to interact and meet face to face the people I will spend the next five years working with, and getting creative together .. (and well, brainstorming on zoom kills said creativity) Yes, but.. working on what ? Earth hero. When a friend suggested ‘i might like it’, i first raised my eyes (🙄) and then decided I should at least give it a try. So, I downloaded it.
As scientists rebellion action go on worldwide, asking for climate change to be tackled with the urgency it deserves to be treated, is time to take a look at what goes on inside universities and how can university themselves, as insitution and not simply as single 'scientists', make an impact in the right direction
Communication is important in these days and age. I have already spoken about the ‘power of the narrative’. It’s all about the stories we tell and how we tell them.
Stories are made of words, and vocabulary is something that is constantly evolving. There is a cycle whereby ‘new words’ enter our everyday lives, then become overused (some may say abused) and then new ones enter and the cycle starts again. The newest IPCC report is out
And how could I not talk about it? The IPCC is the Intergovernmental panel on climate change, is the United Nation body for assessing the science of climate. Divided up in three main working groups (a ‘physical science’, an ‘impacts, adaptation and vulnerability’ and a ‘mitigation’) plus a task force on inventories.. The latest report was all about mitigation of climate change. The full report is 63 pages long but there is also a summary for policymakers available The key points? |
